Container Cover Maintenance- How to Keep Your Cover Performing for Decades

One of the biggest advantages of a steel container cover is how little maintenance it requires. Compared to a wood structure, a fabric tent, or even a traditional steel building — a galvanized steel container cover is about as close to maintenance-free as you can get.
But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” Here’s what you should do to keep your cover performing at its best for decades.
Annual Inspection — Once a Year Is All You Need
Set aside a few hours once a year — ideally in the spring after winter is over — to walk through these checks:
Fasteners and bolts. Check that all bolts and fasteners are tight. Vibration from wind and temperature cycling can loosen hardware over time. A wrench and 30 minutes is all it takes.
Mounting plates. Inspect the mounting plates where your cover connects to the containers. Look for any signs of movement, cracking in welds, or corrosion at contact points.
Roof panels. Walk the perimeter and look up. Check for any panels that have shifted, separated, or show signs of damage. In most cases you’ll find nothing — but it’s worth checking.
Gutters and downspouts. Clear any debris that has accumulated. Blocked gutters can cause water to back up and pool in unintended areas.
End walls and doors. Check that end wall panels are secure and that door hardware is functioning correctly.
Snow Load Management
Every CNC container cover is engineered to handle the snow loads specific to your location in Canada. You should not need to manually remove snow from a properly engineered cover.
However, if you experience an exceptionally heavy or wet snow event that significantly exceeds normal conditions for your area — inspect your cover after the storm. In the unlikely event of unusual deflection or stress, contact us.
Never walk on your roof panels for snow removal. If snow removal is ever needed, use a roof rake from the ground.
Corrosion Prevention
Galvanized steel is highly resistant to corrosion — that’s the point of galvanization. But no coating lasts forever, especially in coastal environments, high humidity areas, or locations where de-icing chemicals are used nearby.
Inspect annually for any areas where the galvanized coating has been scratched or compromised. Touch up exposed steel with cold galvanizing compound — available at any hardware store — to prevent rust from taking hold.
Pay particular attention to areas where steel contacts steel, like mounting plates and fastener points. These are the most common locations for corrosion to begin.
Ventilation
If your cover is enclosed with end walls, make sure ventilation is adequate for your use. Moisture buildup inside a sealed container cover can accelerate corrosion on the containers themselves and on stored equipment.
If you’re storing machinery, vehicles, or sensitive materials — make sure your cover has adequate airflow through vents, louvres, or doors left partially open.

A CNC steel container cover is built to last 30-40 years with proper care. Annual inspection, keeping fasteners tight, and basic corrosion prevention is all it takes.
